Well, I'm in my year out and so far happily avoiding any programming.. BUT, I don't want to go back to uni next year and not have started my Final Year Project..

A big hindrance in this regard is the that that my 5-year old computer doesn't let me program or compile anything at ALL. It just jams up and goes dead, makes buzzing sounds for ages and refuses to co-operate. It's just horribly slow and impossiblt o program on.

So I need to get a new one thats FAST FAST FAST and efficient. Fast being very important, and I want something that won't just jamp up and die on me after a while :crying:

I need something good I can program on happily and figured that now is the best time to get one, since they won't be getting any cheaper than they are in the Jan-Sales..

So I need HELP!

and advice on the best deal I can get and the best computer I can get for myself.

I don't really want to go over a grand, my parents would kill me. And I would probably regret it loads as I spent one and half grand on this pile of junk five years ago.

At £20 over budget.. what do you guys think of below?

I'm hopeless, I really need help on this whole thing.. I want a good, reliable, fast computer.. is there such a thing?!

anyways... theres three diff processor options there.. how much of a big deal is it if I go for the 3.0 cheapest one instead of the 3.2 or 3.4?

that'd take £200 ~ off the price

sorry for closing the thread there guys.. I just wanted to post that spec and stuff before anyone replied and was having trouble with the WYSIWYG editor..

AbdelWahab: I don't want to go down the route of getting a Mac.. want a Windows comp (don't ask why, lol) ..If I have enough space and speed I'd get a partition put in and install Linux on it too.. maybe.. if I can be bothered too

How much isit?£1,020 for the options I selected.. thats the 3.4 Processor.. which is why I asked if it makes a huge diff if I go for the cheaper one instead..

Reema.. yep sis, CompSci.. want Pentium 4.. lots of hard drive space over 100Gig.. 512 RAM min.. DVD R/W.. and just basically I want it to be reliable, FAST and be able to handle loads of apps running together..

The one I've got know, just buzzes forever and does nothing if I have too much running.. and as soon as I touch a Java programming app.. bye-bye computer.. it goes dead :freedom:

Any advice and suggestions will ve VERY much appreciated :)

what about buying seperate parts and then building the pc?

it would be cheaper and you would be getting better quality parts because youd be able to choose every component.

Ahh...if your gonna do multi tasking then you wont really need a 3.4GHz. A 3.0GHz is fine. The memory type on the dell website is DDR2 and that is bludy fast. check this one out. I edited it to your specs:

http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=D01845&rbc=D01845&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsrsdimen_8400_3

EDIT: Damn link dont go to the propa one!

Basically chained....just modify the RAM, the DVD drive to the one you want.

As with all things, once the box is open, it decreases in value as time goes by.
Performing at last year rate, might not be a big deal, especially if you're going from a pencil to a notebook :)

I recommend you purchase what you need, not what is the BEST on the market TODAY.
What is the best today, could be outshone by a new product the very next day, then would you ever have buyers remorse !

Heck, I have an old pentium 200 Pro machine that beat most of the machines on the market today ! :)

Mac Takes Honors as Best Unix Desktop
By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols
October 13, 2004
Opinion: GNOME is nice, KDE is fine and the forthcoming Looking Glass may be wonderful, but the best Unix desktop is the one in the Macintosh.

When I first started using Unix, my favorite "desktop" was the Korn shell. It's still my favorite command line interface.

As the years went by and interfaces grew graphical, I grew fond of SCO's Open Desktop. Or, as I sometimes called it on days when my top-of-the-line ATI Ultra card with its 1MB of RAM was grinding away at putting a glorious 256-color display on my monitor, Open Deathtrap.

Then, along came Linux, and life got a lot better. I've used both KDE and GNOME and a host of more obscure Linux desktops such as Enlightenment. These days, though, I've become a confirmed KDE user.

Of course, none of these is even close to being in the running for the best Unix desktop.

No, the best Unix desktop is Aqua, and you'll find it running on any Mac running Mac OS 10.x.

Somewhere along the line, we over in the Linux/Unix/AIX/Solaris world seem to have forgotten that Macs are now Unix workstations.

Under every bright, shiny Mac desktop beats a Unix heart named Darwin. Darwin, in turn, is built on top of Mach 3.0 operating-system services, which run on top of the 4.4 BSD Unix operating system.

KDE and GNOME have both gotten much better, but let's get real. They're not even in the same ballpark.

It comes down to fundamentals. Linux desktops come from developers whose primary interest has always been building powerful tools that give the informed user almost limitless power over how his or her machine works. The key words here are "informed" and "power."

Today's Mac desktop comes from decades of a different design philosophy, where ease of use is all.

Now, as someone with more then 20 years in Unix/Linux, I appreciate what the KDE/GNOME designers are doing, and I know lots of other Linux and Solaris power users do, too.

But most desktop users, and certainly most enterprise desktop users, are not power users. They want their systems to be easy to use and for their applications to work. To them, the fact that GNOME configuration management editor GConf-editor lets a GNOME power user fine-tune everything on the desktop to their fondest wishes is less than meaningless—it's useless.

Today's business users also want the applications they already know. StarOffice and OpenOffice are all fine and good but, like it or lump it, most users want the applications they know from Windows, and the Mac gives them most of those. Indeed, Microsoft just released the first service pack for Microsoft Office 2004 for the Mac.

Yes, as I've explained before, you can run most Windows applications on Linux with programs such as my personal favorite Win4Lin, but the bottom line is that you have to go to extra trouble to run applications.

I also have recently had friends rub my nose in the fact that there's no built-in Linux desktop help that's anything close to what Macs offer, or even, dare I say it, Windows.

Just because you or I have no trouble finding help for our desktop problems using a combination of 'man' and 'apropos,' along with a 'HowTo' file we found on the Web, doesn't mean anyone else wants to go to that much trouble. Or, more to the point, that some would even know how to find an answer that way.

The default Linux approach has always been to either look up the answer, as I describe above, or to look for answers in the Linux community. That was fine when Linux was a hobby, but business users want to find their answers on the desktop, not in a LUG (Linux User Group).

I really hope Linux developers start spending more time on polishing up the desktop and improving its help systems and documentation. In the meantime, while Linux and KDE make up my preferred desktop, I think there can be really no question that the best Unix desktop for most users is Mac OS X and Aqua.

eWEEK.com Senior Editor Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols has been using and writing about operating systems since the late '80s and thinks he may just have learned something about them along the way.

CW, look for a PC AMD 64 processor. You can install SUSE linux which will run on it.

More processing power than an intel.

64 bit processing is the way to go now, and your PC will be future-proof for a long while.

Couldn't you just write out your code in long hand, with pencil & paper to prove your point ?

Just imagine the look on your professors face when you hand in a handwritten essay filled with your code for your program :)

Remember, only use a number #2 pencil

Yes. True. The next 64-bit generation processors are much better and quicker. Do beaware that the P4 3.0GHz CPU your buying is a 32-bit.

When the 64-bit OS, games and applications are released only 64-bit chips will support them. They will operate twice as fast as the current 32-bit systems, and will also beable to support much more memory. Problem is that not many companies make AMD64 based systems yet.

So purchasing a 64-bit chip would be a good investment into the future.

Chained,

They key to Multi-task is Ram... the more Ram you have the better it performs.

I built my own system with the followin' spec:

Athlon XP2400
200GD HDD
1024MB Ram
DVDRW 8x

It runs like dream. I absolutely obliterate this PC with the tasks I get this m/c to do. Like, I'm d/l s/t, browsin' the web, playin' Football Manager 2005, and have a host of other thin's runnin' in the background like anti-virus, a few spyware scanners, firewalls and this system is really stable.

It might not be the fasted spec, but it copes fine with big application like AutoDesk Mechanical desktop.

The best part of all is you can buy the parts with a cost of no more than £450... and u can choose ur quality parts urself.

For eg. U can get AMD / Motherboard bundle from Maplin for £150. A 250GB HDD from the net for £100, a DVDRW for 'bout £40.

U have a monitor and a keyboard and mouse, tho u can buy a 15" tft monitor for like £150.

And don't worry so much 'bout software... that can be made available ;)

Do you know anyone that can build PC's?

*information overload.. CW runtime error"

So how am I meant to get hold of a computer with the 64-bit processor?
Links and deals would be much appreciated..

Right now I am very tempted by the Dell Dimension thingy I was looking at.. and I went to Dixons today and saw the most gorgeous 19" TFT's and thought OMG wow, how huge and cool are they?! They are HUGE! (Must be great for movies and stuff.. and having ummah on one side and NetBeans on the other :D )

I also saw my bank balance today though *gulp*

Nasser.. Java, Prolog, Pop-11, Pascal.. I'm no computer geek though (otherwise I wouldn't be asking you guys for help would I ;) ).. like I said I'm happily avoiding it right now :D ..I guess if I set my heart to it I could learn a lot more and get good at stuff, but you know I'm not as passionate about it as I could be.. inshaAllah, I'll get into again, 'cuz I need to get with it for my Final Year Project.. Might be learning C# and VRML next year too..

I'm still SOOO Confused!

So would getting that Intel P4 one be a big mistake in terms of the future.. I want computer I can keep for the next decade and be happy with in terms of speed and reliability!

A decade?... in fact I don't want to buy another computer until I have kids who need one for a degree in Computing or something :freedom:

So what is THE processor to have.. whats the king of all processors for PC's?

Kaiser
26-12-04, 06:30 PM
A few things, never buy the best there is because it costs 50% more and itll still be a obselete junk in 3 years time.

And not to FORGET DONT BUY from DELL, the name itself adds 20% to the price and there is no difference who puts it together, the parts are still the same.

Besides you dont need the processor speed, unless your a powergamer or something you wont need those high processor things and so on.
Heck cut down on all the unneeded stuff, esp the the software, you can get a freeware one instead, only keep the windows and office.
Also there is no way that you should spend more then 300£ on a comp, because itll still be junk in 3 years time.

Also axe the Intel processor take AMD instead its cheaper and just as good.
And take Geforce instead of Radeon.
Also if your a gamer or something then axe the LCD screen, becuase it isnt usable.

And no, it doesnt matter if you buy the best itll still be junk in 3-5 years.
Rather save on the money.

Also big reminder if I didnt mention it axe anything that carries a brand advertised every commercial brake, because the brand itself adds to the price while giving absolutely nothing, exept the sticker which says thats its been made by that company.

Chained_Water
26-12-04, 06:55 PM
Right I'm not a gamer.. and never will be I don't think.. it doesn't really interest me, even if I was into gaming.. I wouldn't use a PC for that in any case.

Kaiser
26-12-04, 07:02 PM
Also you dont have to rebuy any software you already have.
And since your not a gamer you can go for the LCD.

Like I said try to keep it in the 300£ price range.
Oh yeah and dont get Celeron its garbage.
Get AMD and Geforce, also get a lower end CPU, cuz the top notch ones only give a 10% boost at a 50-100% price increase.

Sultan
26-12-04, 08:53 PM
In my local PC World, they had a couple of AMD64 computers. But you can get much better deals via mail order from a manufacture.

Try looking in the magazine Computer Shopper. They advertise many companies selling machines with AMD 64 processors.

Acer are starting to sell AMD 64 machines from £599 upwards. Eversham also have them as well as Aries and even Time.

I think the latest Suse Linux is the only version of Linux that has a disk which comes precompiled for 64 bit machines.

Also Windows XP will still run on an AMD 64 bit processor, but won't take advantage of the extra oooomph!

Remember, 32-bit chips are on their way out next year!

a64 over p4 to be honest, alot of people who have both say intel are better in multitasking but the a64 should be fast enough to handle multitasking easily.

the new lga775 socket intel cpus do have 64 bit but theyve had a few problems so id go with a64 which has been out for a time and is maturing very well.

I specced the following from ebuyer.

AMD Athlon 64 3400 Newcastle 130nm (Socket 754) - Retail £143

Asus K8N-E Deluxe Socket-754 nForce3 motherboard £73

I've checked out ebuyer and feel confused.. I don't think I've got the confidence to put something together myself and mix and match what I want.. I haven't really got a clue about what I'd need and how it'd all go together and what would be compatible with what..

For me the only real advantage of somewhere like Dell is the ease of buying..

if I was you, id buy a prebuilt system from 1 of the links i provided before, and add a tft/mouse/keyboard.

still would work out cheaper then buying from dell. but around £100-200 more expensiver then buyin parts seperately.

anyways.... so is everyone saying I should definately go for an AMD Athlon 64-bit rather than Intel P4?

if you get a extra stick, get a pc3200 stick. dont get the cheap ebuyer sticks. ive had nothing but trouble with them, so have other people who have purchased them if u chek their reviews.

MACINTOSH IBOOK G4
http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/
Surf the Web, chat with people, do homework, play games, even burn DVDs and CDs to create your own video or musical masterpiece. In your favourite café. At 2 am. The iBook G4 delivers today’s digital lifestyle to your backpack, starting at £749 (UK) / €1,099 (Ireland).
With a fast PowerPC G4 processor running at accelerated speeds up to 1.33GHz, a DVD-burning SuperDrive, up to 1.2GB of memory and built-in wireless networking capability, the iBook G4 introduces impressive performance and flexible mobility to your everyday life. Why not invite it over for coffee?
You Can Take It with You
The built-in wireless capability on every iBook G4 means you can work or play anywhere. Enabled with AirPort Extreme technology, the iBook can surf the Web in any Wi-Fi hot spot, from hotels to bookshops. With an AirPort Extreme or Airport Express Base Station in your room or office, you can get online from the comfort of your sofa. The iBook also offers an incredible 6 hours of battery life. Thanks to the energy-saving features built in to the PowerPC processor, the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor and Mac OS X Panther, the iBook works as long as you do.
As the lightest all-in-one consumer notebook on the market, the 12.1-inch iBook G4 weighs in at a mere 2.2 kg (4.9 pounds). The 14.1-inch model weighs just 2.7 kg (5.9 pounds). Many textbooks weigh more than either one. The iBook G4 is thin, too — a svelte 3.42 cm (1.35 inches), to be exact — making this impressive notebook small enough to fit in a backpack and light enough to carry around all day.
Rave-Worthy Performance
You can order your iBook with either a 1.2GHz or a 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine and 512K Level 2 Cache. To maximise its speed, Apple engineers pair the G4 processor with a fast 133MHz system bus and 256MB of on-board memory to accelerate calculations and make your applications scream. And you’ll be glad to hear that you can boost memory capacity to a remarkable 1.25GB of memory, giving you room to run many applications at once.
All systems come well equipped. Roomy hard drives offer up to 60GB capacity. With iBook’s slot-loading Combo Drives you can watch DVDs, play music CDs, and burn your own data CDs and music CDs. And if you’d also like to burn DVDs on the road, the 14-inch iBook G4 comes equipped with Apple’s impressive SuperDrive.
You can also include an optional Bluetooth module for wireless connections to a wide range of peripheral devices. Built-in FireWire, USB 2.0 and a long list of other expansion options offer numerous communication and data transfer capabilities.
An Impressive Display
Both iBook models offer brilliant 1024 x 768 pixel resolution — ideal for doing everything from working on spreadsheets to displaying your movies and digital pictures in millions of colours. What’s more, the iBook display scales down beautifully, again with millions of colours, for special games and applications optimised for 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 pixel resolutions. And both come powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32MB of dedicated video memory and AGP 4x support for dazzling 3D graphics that bring games to life.
Mac OS X Panther
The iBook comes with Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther”, Apple’s easy-to-use, next-generation operating system. Mac OS X Panther gives you over 150 new features, including Exposé (for making the most of the real estate on your screen), Fast User Switching (perfect for families who share one computer system) and FileVault (ironclad security for all the files on your hard disk). Naturally, you also get the Internet to go, with automatic networking to make connecting a doddle: Mac OS X senses whether you’re connecting from home, school or the office and configures your system automatically. And with Mac OS X’s Instant On feature, your iBook wakes from sleep instantly when you open it.

http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/specs.html
For a laptop, the inside of a backpack can be a jarring environment filled with shifts, bounces and the occasional bump. That’s why Apple engineers designed the iBook G4 from inside out to stand up to the rigours of a strenuous life on the go. After all, you shouldn’t have to walk softly just because you’re carrying the world’s most appealing notebook.
Made from ultra-tough polycarbonate plastic — the same high-grade material used in bulletproof glass — the iBook’s sleek white case resists impact. While that measure alone might have allowed iBook to comfortably survive everyday use and abuse, Apple engineers took the idea of protecting your investment quite seriously. Inside, a sturdy magnesium frame provides superior strength, while reducing the weight of the iBook G4 to well below that of other full-featured PC notebooks (1). Rubber mounted for added bump tolerance, the iBook’s hard disk drive lets you store all of your digital goodies and still enjoy peace of mind. What’s more, the iBook has no I/O doors, protruding elements — and no optical drive tray, either — to break or snap off when tucked into a backpack or briefcase.
Power Adaptor
When you’re ready to take your iBook G4 out of your backpack and plug it in, you’ll find a well-designed, square-shaped power adaptor that will serve all your needs. The adaptor, which fits easily in your hand, has retractable hooks that let you wrap the DC cord for neater storage. While you can use the included AC plug to connect the adaptor directly into a nearby wall outlet, your iBook also includes a separate AC Cord that lets you plug into an outlet up to 12 feet away. Coloured LED lights show charging status. An amber ring indicates that your battery is recharging, while a green ring tells you that you have a full charge.

More Information

Design for the Environment

1. Battery life depends on configuration and use.
2. Burning DVDs in iDVD requires an Apple SuperDrive, but iDVD projects can be saved as an archive on iBook G4 models with a Combo Drive and later transferred to a SuperDrive-equipped system and burned to a DVD.
3. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
4. Compatible ISP and telephone services required. Your ISP may not support all V.92 features. Modem will function according to V.90 standards if V.92 services are not available. Actual modem speeds lower; speed depends on connection rate and other factors.
5. Wireless Internet access requires AirPort Card, AirPort Base Station or AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort and AirPort Extreme. Range may vary with site conditions.
6. Actual rates will vary.
7. Weight varies by configuration and manufacturing process.

Internet access requires a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply. Product contains electronic documentation. Backup copy of software is included.

However you use your iBook G4 — surfing the Internet, playing games, downloading email, browsing your growing iPhoto library or editing movies on the go — you’re bound to appreciate its speed and responsiveness, performance that can be attributed directly to the chip powering Apple’s superfast notebook.
The PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine.
The G4 delivers unparalleled processing power whether you’re importing your favourite CDs as MP3s, creating compositions in GarageBand, rendering multiple transitions or effects in iMovie or simply battling it out with your friends, playing the latest versions of Halo, Unreal Tournament or Quake. They all use the Velocity Engine to gain a tremendous performance boost.
PowerPC G4 and Mac OS X Panther
What’s more, the PowerPC G4 processor works hand in hand with Mac OS X to give you a one-two performance punch. Mac OS X features pre-emptive multitasking that allocates processor cycles on an as-needed basis and protected memory that keeps you up and running even if an application happens to crash. Quartz Extreme takes full advantage of the graphics chip in your iBook G4 to make everything on-screen move faster, freeing up processor cycles for the PowerPC G4 chip, so you can get more done more quickly.
Easier and Faster Editing
Like to see the PowerPC G4 processor at work? The newest version of iMovie (which, of course, you’ll find in your Applications folder, along with the other members of the iLife ’04 application suite: iTunes, iPhoto, GarageBand and iDVD) lets you select multiple clips in the Timeline and apply a transition — let’s say a Cross Dissolve transition — to all of them at once. The PowerPC G4 stands more than ready for such a computational challenge.
And here’s another challenge perfectly suited to the iBook G4. Once you’ve edited a handful of movies, you might be ready to create a DVD of your collected works. Purchase a 14-inch iBook G4 with a SuperDrive and you can burn DVDs wherever you happen to be — at school, in the back garden or at 20,000 feet. It’s the type of computation-intensive task for which we designed the PowerPC G4 processor. In fact, the MPEG-2 encoder in iDVD and Mac OS X’s architecture work with the G4 processor to provide fast encoding of your DVD project. And here’s something you may not have known. If you order an iBook G4 with a Combo Drive, you can still author DVD projects while on the road. Simply take advantage of the new Save As Archive feature of iDVD.

http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/graphics.html

The new iBook G4 delivers gorgeous 3D images and stunning photorealistic effects — just what you need to enjoy the latest generation of Mac games.
That’s because Apple engineers equipped the new iBook G4 with a powerful, professional-level graphics processor. With its ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32MB of DDR SDRAM and AGP 4X, the iBook G4 delivers incredible 2D, 3D and multimedia graphics performance for today’s most demanding games and applications.
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
The Mobility Radeon 9200 performs astonishingly fast 32-bit true colour rendering. It supports multi-texturing and 3D effects, and it helps you get the most fun out of your fast-action games and multimedia titles. What’s more, it features SMARTSHADER technology for amazing enhancement in detail and performance (Watch in awe how realistically it renders such elements as metals, liquids and wood). So not only does it deliver a tremendous speed boost, it gives you spectacular 3D images and even more photorealistic effects.
With 32 megabytes of on-board dedicated DDR RAM, the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with AGP 4X has plenty of memory to give your multimedia applications a boost for rendering 3D graphics on the fly. Large visual elements can refresh themselves swiftly after image manipulations such as filters, blurs and colour corrections. And because main memory doesn’t get tied up with graphics processing, you get smoother system performance all around.
See for Yourself
You’ll see the iBook G4 advantages in action when you play games like Freeverse Software’s Airburst Extreme. First of all, the iBook G4 gives you options for network gaming. You can play tethered — taking advantage of built-in 10/100-BASE-T Ethernet to join your fellow combatants over a wired network. Or you can play wirelessly. With the simple addition of an AirPort Extreme Card, you can go head-to-head with your friends — and take advantage of such new features as Voice over IP technology — from just about anywhere in your house at up to 54Mbps. What’s more, thanks to Mac OS X and the stellar performance offered by iBook’s graphics processor, you’ll appreciate superb on-the-road gameplay and enjoy many new highly detailed environments served up in Airburst Extreme.
Brilliant resolution
The iBook’s brilliant 12.1-inch or 14.1-inch TFT XGA active-matrix display is perfect for playing games, editing videos, watching QuickTime movies and managing your digital photo collection. And razor-sharp 1024-by-768 pixel resolution lets you show what you can easily do with iMovie, iPhoto and other great applications that excel on the Mac.
And just wait until you try your hand at digital photo editing. Connect a digital camera to one of the iBook’s USB 2.0 ports and iPhoto will take care of the rest for you, importing your images and helping you organise them. You’ll be editing images like a pro, removing blemishes and red eye, cropping images precisely, creating 4x6 prints on your inkjet printer or ordering them online with just one click.

http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/wireless.html
Every iBook lets you go wireless just about anywhere — from your living room to a bookshop in another city.
You can do it with AirPort Extreme, technology from Apple that lets you enjoy the Web without wires, additional phone lines or complicated networking hardware (1) getting in the way. With your iBook and an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, you can get online wirelessly from, say, the comfort of your sofa — or anywhere within 45 metres (150 feet) of the Base Station.
Every iBook G4 comes AirPort Extreme-ready with built-in antennas, software and the AirPort Extreme Card. You’ll never run out of cool things to do with it — and you won’t run out of cool locations to do them in, either (2).
Free the Music
AirPort Express with AirTunes lets you listen to your iTunes music library through your home stereo or powered speakers. Just plug your stereo or speakers into the audio port on the AirPort Express Base Station with an audio cable and use your iBook to play music from any room. Or bring your AirPort Express and iBook to a party and play DJ on a friend’s stereo. You’ll find that an iBook and AirTunes are the ultimate ice breakers.
Works Through Walls
AirPort technology uses radio signals to communicate through solid objects, unlike infrared signals that require an unobstructed line of sight. So you can cruise the Internet even when there’s something blocking your view of the Base Station. In other words, you can surf the Internet through walls.
Share a Connection
AirPort really pays off when you have just one Internet account and everyone wants to get online at the same time: several users can all share a single Internet connection and surf different Web sites or use email simultaneously. And at school, students can take their wirelessly networked iBooks into different classrooms or onto different floors of a building — up to 45 metres (150 feet) away from an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station — and still maintain their connection.

Password-Protected Base Station
AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express Base Stations come equipped with a built-in firewall to help prevent access to sensitive data on your computer and the ability to secure over the air transmissions with 128-bit WEP encryption. The integrated firewall prevents unauthorised Internet users from accessing your private network, which includes all the wired computers attached to the base station as well. That’s because when your Base Station is configured to share your Internet connection with other machines, it serves out private network addresses to all of the computers on your network. Since these addresses are known only to the Base Station, your computers are hidden from IP-based, Web-launched attacks.
AirPort Security
And you’ll be safe while you surf because AirPort provides strong security features. When it’s transmitting information, AirPort uses 128-bit encryption to scramble data, keeping your personal information safe from eavesdroppers.
All You Need
As an iBook G4 user, you just need an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station to go wireless in your home, classroom or office. Your iBook comes with a pre-installed AirPort Extreme Card and all the necessary software.
Wi-Fi Certified
802.11g AirPort Extreme is a powerhouse in the performance department, with the new 802.11g technology delivering a wireless data rate of up to 54 megabits per second (Mbps). The fastest broadband connections typically achieve speeds up to 1.5Mbps. AirPort Extreme, on the other hand, lets you share files with others on your network at speeds of up to 54Mbps — over 35 times faster. And because AirPort Extreme is Wi-Fi certified for 802.11b and 802.11g interoperability (including PCs), you can use your AirPort Extreme-enabled iBook G4 at thousands of wirelessly-enabled locations.
Wireless Networking on the Go
You can use AirPort Extreme to get online wirelessly at hundreds of locations around the world. Staying at a hotel? Log on wirelessly, using your AirPort Extreme-enabled iBook G4.
Hundreds of hotels around the world have made Wi-Fi compliant 802.11b wireless local area networks (WLANs) available in their guest rooms. Wayport, Inc., for instance, has provided wireless connectivity in thousands of rooms at more than 400 major hotels in the US. And because AirPort Extreme is 802.11b compatible, you can use your iBook G4 to surf the Internet in any of them.

The Setup Assistant is intelligent and will use an existing Internet account if you have one.
Bluetooth-Ready
Support for Bluetooth is built into every new iBook G4 model. Like AirPort, Bluetooth connects wirelessly to digital devices such as Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, handhelds and peripherals. What’s more, you can even choose to enjoy a cable-free desktop with Apple’s Bluetooth-enabled wireless keyboard and mouse. Operating within a short range, it enables wireless data transfers between a rapidly growing list of Bluetooth-savvy peripherals. Using iSync and Bluetooth, for instance, you can synchronise personal information between your iBook, your mobile phone and your Palm OS-based handheld.
Network Autosensing
Mac OS X has a network autosensing feature that detects the fastest network available to you — a school or office LAN, AirPort or modem — and automatically configures it for network activity. So you won’t need to switch settings to use AirPort.
Signal Strength
When AirPort Extreme is in use, a system menu monitors the signal strength to let you know if your iBook is within range of a connection. You can use this menu to quickly change networks.
Get a .Mac Membership
Sign up for a .Mac membership, get an exclusive mac.com email address and use Apple’s HomePage to launch your own Web site. HomePage lets you build a sharp-looking Web site in minutes, with no previous experience. And with AirPort, you can do it wirelessly.
iBook Wireless Mobile Classroom
Turn any classroom into a computer lab with the iBook Wireless Mobile Classroom. With this innovative solution, more students can experience the benefits of technology-based learning. In addition, schools can save on technology costs and regain valuable space by converting dedicated computer labs back into classrooms. The iBook Mobile Classroom provides exceptional value by combining the management and control of a computer lab, the freedom of portable computing and the power of the Internet into a simple, affordable, rolling solution.
1. Wireless Internet access requires a wireless-enabled computer, a Base Station or other access point and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort.
2. Range may vary with site conditions.

http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/software.html
When it comes to surfing the Internet, getting your email, chatting with friends and colleagues, playing CDs, transferring your favourite music to your computer and organising it into playlists, playing games and managing your growing library of digital photos, the iBook G4 provides you with all of the software you need. And more.
World’s Most Advanced Operating System
Let’s start with the most important component: Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther”. Apple’s next-generation operating system creates a fast and extremely stable foundation for all your computing activities. Panther supports the same standards used in Windows and Microsoft-specific technologies, so you can share files with PC-using friends and colleagues, share the same network, even share the same peripherals, including printers, scanners and cameras. At home, at work or in the classroom, Panther lets your iBook G4 fit in perfectly.
The ultimate OS for the digital lifestyle, Panther also lets you work with today’s most popular FireWire and USB 2.0 peripheral devices. Plug in your digital camera or camcorder and Mac OS X will recognise it immediately, launching iPhoto or iMovie, so you can download your images or start transferring movie clips.
A delight to use, Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther” has some tricks in store just for a notebook toter like yourself. Take Exposé, for example. We all know how easy it is to have an overabundance of windows open at the same time. Ever poke and prod your way through open window and documents just to uncover the one you’re looking for? No more. No matter how many windows you have open, just type the F9 key and Exposé instantly tiles them all, scaling them down and neatly arranging them, so you can see what’s in every one of them. When it comes to maximising screen space, Panther and Exposé really deliver the goods.
Internet Tools Galore
What’s more, Panther comes with an entire collection of fast and dependable software tools for our Internet-dependent age. Let’s start with tools to browse the Internet.
Go on Safari

I put this on the back burner and I'm still not sure what to do..
right now I'm thinking forget the Athlon 64-bit.. because I'm not a gamer or anything so I don't really need that extra kick for processing.. P4 should be OK (shouldn't it) ..and with the loads of RAM.. that'd be OK for multitasking which is my main worry..

:crying: I hate having to buy stuff!

This how indecisive I am!

:banghead:

Hmm@laptop.. thats what zoobz said (only 'cuz he's trying to flog me one!)

But everyone else has been advising me against it.. they had very good reasons why not to get one as a student, can't remember them now though :p

I think laptops being more expensive (for same spec as PC) comes into it, and being harder to get repaired and more prone to damage, etc..

Power Mac G5
The creative class needs superior tools to produce designs, music, high-definition video or the next scientific breakthrough. The new Power Mac G5 line extends as far as you require. Up to two 64-bit G5 processors reaching top speeds of 2.5GHz, room for up to 8GB of main memory, pro performance graphics cards and ultrahigh-bandwidth system architecture will give you more results than systems costing twice as much. Models start at just £999 (UK) / €1,459 (Ireland).
Supersonic Speed
Mac OS X really shines at top speeds, and the Power Mac G5 offers whiplash-fast models, from a single-processor 1.8GHz configuration to the dual-processor power of 1.8GHz, 2GHz and 2.5GHz models with a substantial speed boost at the top of the line. The dual 2.5GHz model packs so much power into tight quarters that Apple designed a liquid cooling system, resulting in a cool tower that runs Photoshop nearly two times faster than a Pentium 4-based system. In fact, for most creative endeavours, the Power Mac G5 simply has no competition in its class.

Does It Faster
The PowerPC G5 processor dramatically accelerates performance in real-world applications. When compared head-to-head against PCs in a large series of Photoshop tests, the dual 2.5GHz, dual 2GHz, dual 1.8GHz and single 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 systems ran the 45 filters 98%, 82%, 66% and 20% faster, respectively, than the 3.4GHz Pentium 4-based system, and 75%, 63%, 48% and 11% faster than the dual 3.2GHz Xeon-based system (1).
Exquisitely Advanced Technology
With 64-bit power and high-bandwidth architecture, this groundbreaking system alleviates the limitations and bottlenecks of the traditional PC — opening up a wealth of possibilities for 2D and 3D designers, video and audio producers, scientists, researchers and game developers and players. The industry’s fastest frontside bus, an advanced system controller and high-speed, high-capacity memory combine to make the Power Mac G5 one of the fastest PCs ever built.
Bandwidth to Burn
The ultrahigh-bandwidth system architecture of the Power Mac G5 features up to a 1.25GHz frontside bus — one on each processor — for maximum throughput from the system to the G5 processor. And a point-to-point system controller lets data move directly between subsystems, without affecting processor function.
Plugged In
It’s easy to plug printers, scanners and other devices into the Power Mac G5. In addition to sporting a full complement of ports on the back, the front panel of the Power Mac G5 offers FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, as well as a headphone jack. Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire, USB 2.0 and optical digital and analogue audio are integrated through an 800MHz bi-directional HyperTransport bus.
High-speed AGP 8X Pro Graphics Bus
The Power Mac G5 comes with the ATI Radeon 9600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics card installed in an AGP 8X Pro slot for a maximum bandwidth of 2.1 GB per second. And that’s a good thing, because the Power Mac G5 uses graphics cards not only to accelerate the latest video games, but the entire system as well. AGP 8X Pro gives Quartz Extreme the fullest power to display Mac OS X features as quickly as possible. Your graphics card does some heavy lifting so the G5 processor can do more number crunching at the same time.
PCI-X Expansion
The dual 2.0GHz and dual 2.5GHZ Power Mac G5 models come with three PCI-X slots, giving you the benefit of the advances in PCI technology. The PCI-X protocol supports high-performance PCI devices, increasing speeds from 33MHz to 133MHz and throughput from 266Mbps to 2GBps. So you can customise your Power Mac G5 to your creative use, with video capture cards, pro audio tools, fibre channel networking and high-speed disk drives.
Four on the Floor
The Power Mac G5 product line comes in four muscular configurations — single 1.8GHz, dual 1.8GHz, dual 2.0GHz and dual 2.5GHz — to support your creative endeavours. They all feature the legendary SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) as standard equipment across the line at 8X speed. And of course they come with one FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports, three PCI-X or PCI expansion slots, DVI connector, ADC connector, two USB 2.0 ports, analogue audio in, analogue audio out, optical S/PDIF in, optical S/PDIF out, front headphone and speaker jack and built-in Gigabit Ethernet — all as standard equipment. All models are AirPort Extreme-ready and feature an optional internal Bluetooth module.
1. Testing conducted by Apple in May 2004 using pre-production dual 1.8GHz, 2GHz and 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 units and in August 2004 using pre-production single 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 units; all other systems were shipping units. File size = 600MB. For PC systems, cache sizes were: Dell Dimension XPS = 512K L2; Dell Precision 650 = 512K L2 per processor and 2MB L3 per processor; Alienware Aurora = 1MB L2.

The Apple Store UK and the Apple Store Ireland offer secure and convenient online ordering 24 hours a day.

Eight Times the Drive
Every Power Mac G5 comes with SuperDrive, now at 8X DVD-R. Burn data backups right from your desktop or proof-of-concept DVDs using iDVD, included with iLife. Import iDVD projects into DVD Studio Pro for professional authoring.

64-bit Breakthrough
64-bit processors enable the Power Mac G5 to break through the 4GB barrier and support up to 8GB of 400MHz, 128-bit DDR SDRAM — four times more than a typical PC. More main memory and fast 6.4GBps throughput means you can write large projects to memory forty times faster than to a hard disk.

Design for the Environment

Supporting Every Grand Venture is a Solid Foundation
Start your next project on the ultimate creative platform. Each of the four Power Mac G5 models offers lightning-fast performance, built on G5 processors running at up to 2.5GHz. A 64-bit processor with two double-precision floating-point units, two integer units and support for symmetric multiprocessing, the G5 combines an optimised Velocity Engine with a superscalar, super-pipelined execution core that can execute more than 200 simultaneous in-flight instructions. This high-bandwidth core has over 12 discrete functional units that process massive amounts of instructions in parallel.
Designed for Future Thought
The PowerPC G5 offers a seamless transition to 64-bit performance: current 32-bit code — such as Mac OS X, the Mac OS 9 Classic environment and existing applications — runs natively at processor speed. With no interruptions to your workflow. And no additional investment in software required to take advantage of 64-bit power. The PowerPC architecture was designed from the ground up to run both 32-bit and 64-bit application code. This enables the G5 processor to run applications natively for an immediate performance boost.

G5 Architecture

The radically-designed, ultrahigh-bandwidth system architecture of the Power Mac G5 helps the PowerPC G5 processors perform to their full potential.
Bottlenecks in the system architecture are usually what hold back the fastest processors. That’s why the Power Mac G5 system architecture has been engineered to eliminate traffic jams in your data path. The Power Mac G5 system architecture delivers phenomenal throughput for the most intensive image-editing, rendering and scientific computing tasks — without the stop-and-go traffic patterns that can choke even the fastest processors.
Consider the frontside bus, for instance: there’s one for each processor for maximum throughput to and from each PowerPC G5 processor. And the point-to-point system controller allows data to move directly between all subsystems — without affecting the processor. Add to that the 400MHz, 128-bit memory bus, AGP 8X Pro graphics bus — as well as the HyperTransport interface that connects the PCI-X controller and the I/O subsystems to the system controller — and you’re looking at some impressive architectural advances that speed up the data flow inside your computer.

The Power Mac G5 boosts the performance of the PowerPC G5 processor with a high-bandwidth system architecture.

Frontside Bus Up To 1.25GHz
Designed to harness the power of the PowerPC G5 processor, a 1.25GHz, 64-bit bidirectional Double Data Rate (DDR) frontside bus maximises throughput between the processor and the system controller. And unlike most processor interfaces, which can carry data in only one direction at a time and waste precious time changing directions, the PowerPC G5 features two high-speed unidirectional 32-bit data paths — one flowing continuously into the processor and one flowing from the processor. This lets data move in opposite directions simultaneously, with no other demands on the data stream and no wait time while the processor and system controller compete for use of the bus. What’s more, the data streams integrate clock signals along with the data, allowing the frontside bus to work at speeds of up to 1.25GHz for an astonishing 10GB per second of aggregate bandwidth.
Independent Buses
Each G5 processor has its own dedicated bi-directional interface to the system controller. That’s a mind-boggling 20GB per second of total bandwidth on dual 2.5GHz systems — more than twice the 6.4GBps maximum bandwidth of Pentium 4-based systems using the latest PC architecture. In addition to providing fast access to main memory, this high-performance frontside bus architecture enables each PowerPC G5 processor to discover and access data in the other processor’s L1 and L2 caches for ultrafast performance.
AGP 8X Pro Graphics Bus
The Power Mac G5 sports AGP 8X Pro for next-generation 3D graphics. And “Pro” means you get up to 75 watts to power industrial-strength graphics. This specification doubles maximum transfer rates, and doubles the amount of data transferred in a single AGP bus cycle. The 66MHz AGP 8X Pro bus strobes eight times per clock cycle, resulting in a 533MHz data rate and blistering bandwidth of 2.1GB per second.
Advanced PowerPC G5 System Controller
Central to the overall performance of the Power Mac G5 is the system controller. This revolutionary Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) is one of the industry’s fastest. As an advanced engineering concept, it’s beautiful in its simplicity: a point-to-point architecture provides each primary subsystem with dedicated throughput to main memory, neatly avoiding time-consuming contention for bandwidth (unlike subsystems that share a bus and are compelled to constantly negotiate for access and bandwidth across a common data path).
400MHz Memory
The Power Mac G5 memory controller supports fast 400MHz, 128-bit DDR SDRAM, and enables main memory to address two banks of SDRAM at a time, reading and writing on both the rising and falling edge of each clock cycle. This effectively doubles the bandwidth, enabling the Power Mac G5 to reach a maximum memory throughput of up to 6.4GB per second — an advance that’s especially welcome when you’re working with enormous files. In addition, direct memory access (DMA) works with the point-to-point system controller to give each subsystem — such as PCI cards and graphics processing units — its own 6.4GBps interface to main memory, without siphoning power from your processors.
Thanks to the 64-bit PowerPC G5 processor, the Power Mac G5 can address more memory than most other desktop PCs. The dual 2.0GHz and dual 2.5GHz systems have eight DIMM slots, and can hold up to 8GB of memory — enough to process huge data sets and rich media files within system RAM, without the delay of having to access the disk drive.
133MHz PCI-X Expansion
The Power Mac G5 features PCI-X, which increases the PCI bus speed from 33MHz to 133MHz, and the throughput from 266MBps to a combined total of 2GBps. PCI-X operates more efficiently, giving you more usable bandwidth at any clock frequency — ideal for HD video and other high-bandwidth applications.
High-performance I/O
The HyperTransport protocol integrates the Power Mac G5 I/O subsystems and connects them to the system controller. Serial ATA, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire, USB 2.0 and optical digital and analogue audio are all integrated through two bi-directional 800MHz HyperTransport interconnects for a maximum throughput of 1.6GB per second.
Serial ATA Storage
The Power Mac G5 can hold two internal Serial ATA drives that support 1.5Gbps throughput per channel (equivalent to a 150MBps data rate). Designed to meet the demands of digital video editing, 3D modelling and other data-intensive applications, Serial ATA is the next-generation industry-standard storage interface that replaces the typical (a.k.a. Parallel) ATA interface. Since each Serial ATA drive is on an independent bus, there’s no competition for bandwidth as with Parallel ATA.

G5 Processor

Forged from a longstanding partnership between two companies committed to innovation, the G5 drives the largest performance gain in the history of the PowerPC. The 64-bit G5 offers speeds up to 2.5GHz and can address up to 8GB of main memory.
Shatters the 4GB Ceiling
32-bit PCs can only use 4GB of memory. Any more than that requires the use of virtual memory on the hard drive, which is 40 times slower than using RAM. The Power Mac G5 can offer up to 8GB of RAM thanks to the 64-bit G5. So you can store entire 3D worlds, huge scientific data sets and oversized 2D images all in main memory, which lets you manipulate them faster. To repeat: 40 times faster. Theoretically, the 64-bit data paths let the PowerPC G5 access up to 4 terabytes of physical memory. Impractical now, maybe, but the PowerPC G5 architecture allows for plenty of growth well into the future.
Magic Bus
And to get at that data, the PowerPC G5 features an industry-leading 1.25GHz frontside bus for each processor, offering a staggering 20GBps throughput on dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 systems. That’s a huge leap over the Power Mac G4, with a bus speed of 167MHz. That means you won’t have a bottleneck getting information to the chip for processing. Each G5 model features a bus that runs at half the speed of the processor. So you’ll get dual 900MHz frontside buses on a dual 1.8GHz Power Mac G5, dual 1GHz frontside buses on a dual 2.0GHz Power Mac G5 and dual 1.25GHz frontside buses on a dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5.

Award-winning Logic
The PowerPC G5 gets its smarts from the execution core of IBM’s 64-bit POWER series processors, which drive IBM’s successful eBusiness servers, with highly parallel processing, two double-precision floating-point units and advanced branch prediction logic. Apple collaborated with IBM to leverage this industry-leading design for the G5, combining an optimised Velocity Engine with a new superscalar, superpipelined execution core that supports more than 200 simultaneous in-flight instructions. But you won’t have to buy new software to take advantage of the Power Mac G5 speed boost, because Apple and IBM designed the PowerPC architecture to scale from 32- to 64-bit from the beginning.
Manufacturing Marvel
What’s more, all this power is fabricated in IBM’s state-of-the-art process technology using high-performance Silicon-on-Insulator transistors and copper interconnects. Switches store the instructions that the PowerPC G5 ultimately processes in its execution core. Making these transistors smaller and more numerous boosts performance, but presents challenges. Imagine fitting more than 58 million light switches into the space the size of your thumbnail to comprehend the feat accomplished by IBM scientists and fabrication wizards.

Nearly Two Times Faster Than Pentium 4
To demonstrate the superiority of the Power Mac G5, Apple conducted tests using Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0, the most widely used application among creative professionals. Adobe Photoshop is a particularly effective cross-platform measure of system performance because it has been optimised for both Macintosh and Windows platforms. Apple ran the tests using a 600MB Photoshop file and a suite of 45 commonly-used Photoshop actions, including file saving, image adjustments, mode changes and filters. Apple measured the time to execute each filter or function and compared the performance of all actions using an indexed score.
2.5 Times Faster Than Pentium 4 at Bibble
Bibble is a powerful batch image processing application used by professional photographers for decoding files from native digital camera formats (such as Nikon’s .nef) into industry-standard formats (such as .tif). Bibble is a processor-intensive, multiprocessor-aware application that uses symmetric multiprocessing on the Mac and hyper-threading on the PC to enhance performance. Apple tested the performance of the Power Mac G5 running MacBibble 3.1a. The test consisted of batch-converting 85 images from .nef to a 16-bit .tif format and measured how long each system took to complete the task.

When rendering a complete project containing multiple effects and filters, the dual 2.5GHz, dual 2GHz and dual 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 systems running Final Cut Pro HD were 28%, 13% and 4% faster, respectively, than the dual Xeon-based system (1)(4).
Film and Video Virtuoso
No matter what the format — DV, SD, HD or film — the Power Mac G5 gives film and video professionals the freedom and power to create studio-quality projects. The faster G5 processor supports more simultaneous streams and real-time effects and accelerates video processing and rendering. With cutting-edge applications like Apple’s Final Cut Pro HD, Motion, Shake and DVD Studio Pro, and Alias Maya, you can edit sequences, generate effects, composite scenes, author DVDs and animate characters in record time. The PowerPC G5 processor, driving a Mac OS X- and QuickTime-based workflow, provides the flexibility to author in any format and XML extensibility to share projects between applications. The Power Mac G5 also makes it easy to build a state-of-the-art studio, with support for high-speed Xserve RAID storage, a specialised PCI-X acquisition card and high-performance FireWire decks and devices.
28% Faster Than Dual Xeon
One of the final stages of any film or video project is the processor-intensive task of rendering, a process which serves as a benchmark for system performance. Using Final Cut Pro HD on the Power Mac G5, Apple measured the time to render a 30-second uncompressed standard definition (SD) video clip with various commonly-used effects and filters, including animated background texture with feathered alpha channel; four separate, scaled green-screen composites; and animated text with an alpha channel.

The dual 2.5GHz, dual 2GHz, dual 1.8GHz and single 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 systems can play 180, 159, 144 and 85 plug-ins, respectively, compared with a maximum of 42 plug-ins on the Dell Dimension XPS and 106 plug-ins on the Dell Precision 650. (1)(5)

Music and Audio Maestro
With the Power Mac G5, music and audio pros have even more power at their fingertips to compose, record, edit, mix and perform. PowerPC G5 processors effortlessly synthesize instruments and apply effects, and up to 8GB of memory provides ample room to compose using an unprecedented number of tracks. The built-in optical digital and analogue audio ports support new and legacy hardware, and FireWire and USB support connections to virtually any audio, MIDI and storage device. Fast PCI-X provides expansion options for digital signal processing hardware and external storage. Mac OS X with Core Audio can run several applications simultaneously, while Audio Units provide a robust plug-in protocol designed to work seamlessly across Audio Units host applications. And with state-of-the-art applications like Apple’s Logic Pro and Soundtrack, Digidesign Pro Tools, MOTU Digital Performer and Steinberg Cubase SX and Nuendo, you have a wealth of innovative software to capture your inspiration.
Over Four Times More Plug-ins Than Pentium 4
To quantify the performance advantages of the Power Mac G5 for audio production, Apple tested Logic Pro 6.4.1. The Dell Dimension XPS, Dell Precision 650 and Alienware Aurora were tested using Steinberg Cubase SX 2.0.1. Apple created a processor-intensive workload containing multiple unique audio tracks, assigned five default reverb plug-ins to each audio track and tested each platform to see which application could play more plug-ins.

Science and Technology Groundbreaker
The Power Mac G5 gives scientific researchers the ability to make discoveries in record time. Each 64-bit PowerPC G5 processor features two double-precision floating-point units and an optimised Velocity Engine that dramatically accelerates the computational power at hand. UNIX-based Mac OS X lets you run complex scientific applications and command-line tools alongside essential productivity applications, such as Microsoft Excel and Adobe Photoshop. You can develop custom applications while doing everyday work, all on the same computer and in the same operating system. Dual displays can be used to take advantage of the screen real estate of two systems to spread out windows and palettes to visualise more data. So whether you’re doing molecular modelling with PyMOL, searching for DNA alignments with BLAST, analysing statistics with SPSS, modelling equations with Mathematica or building your own programs with Apple’s Xcode tools, the Power Mac G5 offers you the ability to publish fast.

The dual 2.5GHz performed the HMMER search 129% faster than the 3.4GHz Pentium 4-based system, clearly demonstrating the advantages of the Velocity Engine and symmetric multiprocessing (1)(6).
Over Two Times Faster than Pentium 4 at Genome Sequence Matching
To demonstrate the performance advantages of the Power Mac G5 with Velocity Engine for processor-intensive scientific analysis, Apple used HMMER. This genome sequence-matching application uses Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to identify similarities in genetic structures — a critical task in areas such as speech recognition and protein and DNA analysis. By representing the properties of a sequence family as a statistic, an HMM makes it possible to perform highly sensitive database searches. The standard HMMER source code has been optimised for the Velocity Engine. The core routines of HMMER repeatedly perform the same operation on large amounts of data. Utilising single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) technology, the Velocity Engine enables the application to perform the same operation on four pieces of data in a single clock cycle. With the optimised code, the performance of a HMMER search is now more than two times faster than with a 3.4GHz Pentium 4-based PC. To test the performance of the HMMER code, Apple searched for an HMM created from a 358-residue sequence in the protein databank (PDB) and measured the time to search the entire PDB.

1. Testing conducted by Apple in May 2004 using pre-production dual 1.8GHz, 2GHz and 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 units and in August 2004 using pre-production single 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 units; all other systems were shipping units.
2. File size = 600MB. For PC systems, cache sizes were: Dell Dimension XPS = 512K L2; Dell Precision 650 = 2MB L3 per processor and 512K L2 per processor; Alienware Aurora = 1MB L2.
3. Content size = 659MB. For PC systems, cache sizes were: Dell Dimension XPS = 512K L2; Dell Precision 650 = 512K L2 per processor and 2MB L3 per processor; Alienware Aurora = 1MB L2.

G5 expansion

A removable side door gives you access to the slots and bays of the Power Mac G5, so you can add more memory, a second hard drive or an AirPort Extreme Card quickly and easily — no tools required.
Up to 500GB Of Internal Storage
The Power Mac G5 has two Serial ATA hard drive bays for up to 500GB of fast internal mass storage — ideal for video, audio and high-resolution graphics. Built-in software RAID allows you to stripe the two drives for increased performance or mirror them for high reliability. And it’s easy to add storage as your needs grow. Single-drive systems come with the cabling to connect a second hard drive, and the easy-to-open side panel lets you insert a new drive yourself. Want massive system storage? Just use a Fibre Channel PCI card to connect to Xserve RAID, Apple’s high-performance storage system.
Up to 8GB of 400MHz DDR SDRAM
The Power Mac G5 comes with four or eight DIMM slots that use ultrafast PC3200 DDR SDRAM. This high-speed memory operates at 400MHz for up to 6.4GBps throughput. Standard configurations come with 256MB or 512MB of RAM. And since memory is scalable up to 8GB, you can add RAM as your application and workflow requirements increase.
PCI-X Expansion Slots
PCI and PCI-X cards enable the Power Mac G5 to perform specialised tasks, such as video acceleration and audio digital signal processing (DSP). PCI-X supports 3.3V signalling and Universal 33MHz and 66MHz PCI cards. Your built-to-order Power Mac G5 system can be configured with PCI or PCI-X expansion technology. Three 64-bit PCI-X slots let you add one card running at 133MHz and two cards running at 100MHz. Three 64-bit PCI slots allow you to add three 33MHz cards.
FireWire and USB 2.0
All Power Mac G5 systems have one FireWire 400 port on the front and one on the back of the enclosure — as well as a next-generation FireWire 800 port on the back — for connecting to high-bandwidth devices such as DV cameras, hard drives and digital music players. You also get two USB 1.1 ports on the keyboard and three USB 2.0 ports — one on the front and two on the back — for connecting printers, scanners, graphics tablets, keyboards, microphones, speakers, joysticks and other industry-standard input and output devices.
Optical Digital Audio

G5 design

The Power Mac G5 is the world’s coolest personal computer in every sense of the word. Mind-boggling leaps in processing power require innovative design for dissipating heat. So the Power Mac G5 delivers a system that screams with power, not noisy fans.
Hip To Be Cool
Take it up a notch without losing your cool. The top-of-the-line Power Mac G5 with dual 2.5GHz processors squeezes outrageous performance into tight quarters. To cool down those steaming circuits, Apple designed a sophisticated liquid cooling system that takes off the heat without bumping up the noise. Mac OS X dynamically adjusts the flow of the fluid and the speed of the fans based on temperature.

The dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 features an innovative liquid cooling system that’s more efficient than a traditional heat sink. This system provides a continuous flow of thermally conductive fluid that transfers heat from the processors as they work harder. The heated fluid then flows through a radiant grille, where air passing over cooling fins returns the fluid to its original temperature.
Truly Intelligent Design
An exceptional computer demands an exceptional enclosure. The Power Mac G5 has a stunning chassis forged of anodised aluminium. Apple engineers were also pretty obsessive about clutter. That’s why there isn’t any. Especially conspicuous by its absence is that tangle of unsightly wires and cables that turn the inside of a typical PC into a veritable rat’s nest. “A place for everything and everything in its place” isn’t just something your mum said: it’s an important philosophical precept that Apple applies rigorously to hardware design.
This clutter-free design also allows for intelligently managed heat dissipation through four independently controlled thermal zones. To make the Power Mac G5 even easier to cool, a transparent internal air deflector channels airflow over the processor heat sinks and the expansion slots.

It’s no secret that computers generate heat. So Apple divided the inside of the Power Mac G5 into four discrete thermal zones, compartmentalising the primary heat-producing components — processor, PCI, storage and power supply. So the system can decrease the temperature of a single zone without affecting the others.
Each of the four thermal zones is equipped with its own dedicated, low-speed fans. Apple engineered the nine fans to spin at very low speeds for minimum acoustic output. Using 21 different sensors, Mac OS X constantly monitors component temperatures in each zone, dynamically adjusting individual fan speeds to the appropriate levels for the quietest possible operation. As a result, the Power Mac G5 runs two times quieter than the previous Power Mac G4 enclosure.

Take the Power Mac G5 for a spin: see a QuickTime VR

Take a closer look: browse through a gallery of high resolution photos of the Power Mac G5.

Thoughtful Considerations

If you try hard enough you might cram everything into the average PC case. The Power Mac G5 was designed from the inside out so that the case and internals fit together for maximum thermal efficiency.

Access Is Everything
The Power Mac G5’s easy-to-open side panel unlatches in a moment, giving you fast access to the slots and bays inside. For no-hassle expansion, the design lets you add things like memory or an AirPort Extreme card without tools. And drive guides let you mount high-capacity hard drives when your storage needs grow. Or lock it up to keep the inside of your computer safe from tampering.

Plugged In
It’s easy to plug printers, scanners and other devices into the Power Mac G5. In addition to sporting a full complement of ports on the back, the front panel has FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, as well as a headphone jack.

Get a Handle On It
The Power Mac G5’s built-in handles will come in handy the day you need to move all your stuff into that corner office.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh. Be Quiet.

The front and rear panels are perforated for optimal airflow. Cooler outside air enters the enclosure, flows over the heat-producing components, and exits out the rear panel.

G5 graphics

Today’s graphics subsystems power more than just the latest games. They provide the driving force for advanced operating system and application features not found anywhere but Macintosh. The Power Mac G5 features the latest cards from top manufacturers on high-bandwidth AGP 8X Pro for full-throttle visual spectacles.
Apple’s integrated approach to systems engineering means complicated technologies work in concert. The G5 processor with dual floating-point units provides the computational power to calculate detailed scenery and complex visualisations. The graphics processors from ATI and NVIDIA deliver multiple pixel pipelines, hardware transformation and lighting, and vertex and fragment programs, to create fantastic 3D experiences. Mac OS X delivers the foundation for the marriage of the PowerPC G5 and graphics processors. Integrated into the system, OpenGL lets Apple and third-party developers create complex visuals in an industry-standard format and QuickTime renders video and other media, while Quartz Extreme offloads these computations to the graphics processor for maximum system efficiency.
This means your graphics card delivers much of the processing power for creating transitions in Keynote, real-time video effects in Final Cut Pro and particle acceleration in Motion. You’ll even see this power in the Mac OS X interface itself, as your GPU animates the genie effect in the dock, rolls down save and print sheets, choreographs windows in Exposé, and displays system controls for brightness, sound and application switching in a transparent overlay. Such elegant advances can be found only on a Mac, with its powerful combination of UNIX, OpenGL, intuitive interface and impressive hardware. And of course, the Power Mac G5 gives you the best opportunity to harness these capabilities.
You will also enjoy outstanding 3D performance for immersive visual experience in the latest games. The 66MHz AGP 8X Pro bus strobes eight times per clock cycle, giving you a 533MHz data rate and a maximum bandwidth of 2.1 GBps. This performance drives graphics-intensive applications to astonishing resolutions, with lifelike texturing.
Standard configurations of the Power Mac G5 come with the ATI Radeon 9600 XT with 128MB of video SDRAM or the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64MB of DDR SDRAM. Both cards offer the horsepower for faster and smoother gameplay and the graphics programmability for stunning special effects. And in case you’re wondering, programmability is a critical advantage because it allows next-generation games and professional applications to offload computations from the computer’s main processor.
For over-the-top graphics that saturate your senses, choose the optional ATI Radeon 9800 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL or NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card. On both NVIDIA GeForce 6800 DDL cards, the fastest and most visually advanced graphics processors, a 256-bit memory interface and 256MB of GDDR3 video memory combine to deliver production studio-calibre graphics — in real time — perfect for intensive 3D modelling tasks and for equally intensive next-generation games. With highly programmable shader engines and OpenGL feature sets, the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 graphics processors bring the most detailed worlds to life with movie-quality lighting, textures and effects.
You might see such things vividly in close-up in real life or at the movies all the time, of course. But never on a computer screen — at least not in such spectacular detail.

AMD Athlon is the cheaper *equivalent* to P4. You might not get the same BUS frequency and side buffer, but its not s/t u can notice easily.

What makes a difference is RAM... My m/c flies with 1024 PC2700 DDR RAM.

I'm usin' a 2400XP AMD CPU that runs at 2000GHz with 1024mb Ram. And in my view it out performs big sis's Advent 3.08GHz Laptop with 512mb Ram :D

Laptops are great. I'd recommend mobile centrino lappies... longer battery life. U don't get enough ram in them however... so if i was to get a lappy, i'd go for a 256MD one and then buy another stick to beef up memory.

You'll also get wireless connectivity (but lets not go there for a PC novice).

I concur with Sultan that an AMD Athlon 64 would be a better bet - if you're going to be keeping your PC for a while, a 64-bit processor would be a much wiser choice than a 32-bit Intel P4.

I recommend: www.meshcomputers.com

Assalaamu Alaikum

Hmm, well I still haven't bought a computer.

The Athlon 64's are slightly too expensive and not many places do them.. that meshcomputers site looked great but for what I want I think it worked out too much..

Also, I'm not a gamer and I guess I need more memory rather than more processor power, so I'm thinking p4 should be Ok for me.

I'm thinking of buying this.. what you guys think?

So is the spec OK?

I think you should go for it (unprofessional opinion) :)

Ps. Ummah tresury will not be funding this :)

Assalaamu Alaikum bro

 Why won't it?

Me having a decent computer to do my final year project on and be able to moderate ummah efficiently is in the interests of the forum and it's members. I demand for my 19" TFT to be subsidised. That'll be £100 please.

:D

P.S. I'm your number 2 fan, bear that in mind whilst considering this request for funding.

As much as we appreciate your services and hardwork, the treasury believes this purchase is far too extravagant. However the treasury encourages individual members to contribute generously towards our favourite admins purchase which will help a great deal in moderating the forum in near future.

Half the screen? we are talking about over 9" for ummah.com. Thats far too much, ummah window only occupies 4 inches of my screen at work :)

Still I am prepared to consider this, and will hold a meeting with the board of directors and of course the tax payers.

I would not buy a brand name PC insted if I was you I would get a close friend or someone you know to build you a custom made one. Brand name pc's are not as good as custom ones cause they have poor quality parts and alot more expensive and over rated.

Custom pc's you can gather good quality parts at cheaper price and build it the way you want it I have 2 custom pc's they have been running very well I have had them for over 2 years

My 2 pc's

AMD Athlon 2400+
GeForce FX 5200 (decent for online gameing)
2.00 GHz
1.2 G RAM
DSL connection (good for online gameing)

My other computer glowy one

Well I'm not into brands or anything.. it is just that it's the easiest way for me to buy it.. online, click, click, click and then delivered to my door.

I've considered getting it built.. but I can't think of anyone I can get that done from.. just seems like too much trouble to arrange and get to my house.

Also, I'm not a gamer and I guess I need more memory rather than more processor power, so I'm thinking p4 should be Ok for me.

Actually, games need alot more memory then they need processor power. There is atm no game that would need more then 2ghz of processor for max effect.

Processor power would more likely be needed for specific programs that deal with calculations or something.
But trust me take the AMD 64 its def better then the aging P4.

Sorry, my bad, i meant directors of treasury, you do know treasury has been outsourced to the brother's section? Since it was unanimously agreed that mismanagement of funds is more likely if sisters involved :D

Anyway, it seems like a descent machine, you should order it now to get it on the weekend. You need time to unpack and set it up, so weekend is convenient.

If I see something i need, I just cant wait to have it, not to mention the vicious unpacking :)

Well games = not for me.

I just need something I can program on without it taking ten years to compile something and another decade to refresh the screen everytime i try to write any code.

I am willing to indulge myself on the monitor, becuase thats the thing I'll be staring at the whole time so I want a good one thats big so I can have loads of different things on it.

But the processor.. do I NEED a AMD 64? or is P4 good enough.. I thought P4 was good anyway..

AMD 64.. well I'd love to have the spec above with that processor.. but it's too expensive.. even the spec above is stretching me as far as I'm willing to go..

Ugh.. I hate making big purchases, I always regret them and think.. I should have waited 'cuz such and such deal or thing is better and better value..

UGH.. someone at work just pointed out.. this spec has a Dell integrted graphics card thingy.. which means it'll nick some of the RAM and use it up :freedom:

Apparently thats crap, esp as it doesn't say how much it'll use and it will basiclaly slow down the machine by using it's RAM.. and the RAM is what I NEED..
