Verse of the Day:
“…Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance you shall be grateful.” (Qur'an 2 verse 185)
Hadith of the Day:
"Paradise is decorated for Ramadan from the beginning of the year till a following year, and when the first day of Ramadan comes, a wind under the throne blows some of the leaves of Paradise on the maidens with large bright eyes, and they say, 'My Lord, appoint us husbands from among Your servants, with whom we shall be happy and who will be happy with us." (Tirmidhi)

THE RIGHT REASON, THE RIGHT REWARD
Ramadan is the month of Blessings. Many good efforts started therein. Like Ramadan Message (an effort which occurred last Ramadan and has culminated into the monthly Muslim Message), there are thousands of journals, books, magazines, newsletters etc.; millions of lectures, workshops, seminars, get-togethers, etc.; and countless ideas, individual realisations, awakening and resolutions began in Ramadan. A number of uncountable sins and weaknesses have also been put to an end in this special month. That month is here again. Marhaban Ramadan. Welcome! Welcome!! Welcome Ramadan!!! Our month of immeasurable opportunities is here.
Alhamdulillah, by Allah’s grace, you have been kept alive for another opportunity, will Ramadan stir something positive in you? To begin with, you must intend to fast Ramadan before you can even earn any reward from it. As the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intention and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration was for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for." (Bukhari)
Every good thing is preceded with the right intention. The first pillar of Ramadan is the intention of the worshipper which should be to seek Allah’s pleasure, His worldly endowments as well as His Hereafter rewards. This is the proper recipe for success and a peaceful pleasurable life. "If anyone's intention is to seek the hereafter Allah will place his sufficiency in his heart and order his affairs, and the world will come to him submissively; but if anyone's intention is to seek only the worldly good, Allah will place poverty before him and disorder his affairs, and only so much of it as has been ordained for him will come to him." (Tirmidhi)
Therefore, as soon as the moon of the commencement of Ramadan has been sited, you must make the intention to fast by the Fajr (Subhi) prayers. Allah’s Rasul (peace be upon him) said: "He who does not resolve to fast before it is fajr, then there is no fast for him." (Abu Dawud) As you make your intentions in your heart (and you should make this everyday), keep alive in your mind that your heart, the seat of your intention, must be kept pure for Allah and everything you do this Ramadan is to achieve that purpose. Allah says: “Say: Whether you hide what is in your hearts or reveal it Allah knows it all. He knows what is in the heavens and what is on earth. And Allah has power over all things.” (Qur'an 3 verse 29) Sometimes the outcome of your action might not be as planned, Allah judges that action by the intention which propelled it initially. Hence, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained, “Allah does not regard your body and looks, but (He) looks at your hearts.” (Muslim)
For many people, Ramadan is the month when they can achieve their weight loss, for others, it is the time to benefit from the charitable goodwill of the Muslims, and even for some it is their annual Islamic Practice Period. Such intentions greatly undermine the purpose and potentials of Ramadan. Fast for the right reason, and your life can actually change for the best. Fast for Allah and He will reward you abundantly. Allah said, “Fasting is Mine and it I who give reward for it….” (Hadith Qudsi)
Dessert
If anyone started the first day of Ramadan without knowing that Ramadan has started and without having made any intention to start fast, as soon as he realises, he should spend the rest of the day fasting although it will not be regarded as part of his Ramadan. He will have to repay the day’s fast after Ramadan, because he did not have his intention before the day’s fajr

Verse of the Day:
“I have only created jinns and men that they may serve Me. No sustenance do I require of them nor do I require that they should feed Me. For Allah is He Who gives (all) Sustenance Lord of Power Steadfast (for ever).” (Qur'an 51 verses 56-58)
Hadith of the Day:
"Perhaps a fasting person will get nothing from his fast save hunger, and perhaps the one who stands to pray at night will get nothing from his standing except sleeplessness." (Bukhari)

THE GOAL: WILL YOU SCORE?
Fasting is worship and it draws us closer to Allah. Allah has prescribed it to purify our soul so that we are trained in good deeds and self-scrutiny. Hence, fasting means a temporary vacation from various forms of worldly enjoyment, including eating, drinking, sexual desires, shameless gazing, haram income, activities and places. By self-scrutiny we learn to be conscious of our every act because we consciously avoid all that may negate our fast. This attribute is contained in the goal of fasting for Allah says, "… that you may (learn) self-restraint." (Qur'an 2 verse 183)
The goal of fasting is not hardship by debarring us from culinary and sexual pleasure, but it is self-discipline and self-control, thus it includes the prohibition of verbal promiscuity. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Fasting is not [abstaining] from eating and drinking only, but also from vain speech and foul language." (Muslim) In addition, it is a means of spiritual, physical, psychological and mental purification. It is a form of jihad nafsi (the Jihad against the selfish, materialist and mundane soul). Therefore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) has said, "Allah said, 'all the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' FASTING IS A SHIELD OR PROTECTION FROM THE FIRE AND FROM COMMITTING SINS. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.'…” (Bukhari)
The fasting person must be on guard against any act that may cause him to lose the benefits of his fast. Thus, his fast will increase his God-consciousness, and Allah says in the Qur'an: "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you perchance you may attain God consciousness." (Qur'an 2 verse 183) God Consciousness is also derived from other acts which we are encouraged to undertake while fasting. The first is unshaken faith in Allah and complete trust in His promises. The Rasulullah (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever observed fast imbued with faith and with the expectation of reward from Allah, all his past sins are forgiven".
Fasting helps us to experience the realities of the poor and needy. This induces in us a moderate and considerate lifestyle, and a compassionate relationship evolves. We are then moved to help. Therefore we are encouraged to provide others with the means of breaking their fast (iftar) and engaged in the acts of sadaqah (charity) more in Ramadan. Ultimately, we want to seek the long time solution: the ability of the poor and needy to sustain themselves.
Thus is the goal for which Allah has dedicated this month. This is the goal which the over one billion Muslims would be striving to achieve this month. How many will really score, how many would have achieved their aims with this Ramadan. Now that you know what the goal of Ramadan is, what targets have you set for yourself and how do you intend to achieve them?
Dessert
DID YOU FORGET? As Ramadan has just started, you might not have gotten used to the fact that you are fasting and you are likely to eat or sip by mistake. Not to worry, Allah has just fed you and you still have to keep fasting without the fear of re-paying it in the future. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "If one of you eats and drinks out of forgetfulness, let him complete his fast for it was indeed Allah who gave him the food and drink." (Bukhari) Indeed, this deen of ours is easy, simple and sweet.

Verse of the Day:
“…‘I will mislead them and I will create in them false desires; I will order them …to change the (fair) nature created by Allah.’ Whoever forsaking Allah takes Satan for a friend has of a surety suffered a loss that is manifest.” (Qur'an 4 verse 119)
Hadith of the Day:
"When the first night of Ramadan comes, the devils and the rebellious jinn are chained, the gates of Hell are locked and not one of them is opened; the gates of Paradise are opened and not one of them is locked; and a crier calls, 'You who desire what is good, come forward, and you who desire evil, refrain.' Some are freed from Hell by Allah, and that happens every night." (Al-Hakim)

ARISE FROM THE LOWEST OF THE LOW!
Man by his very nature is weak and defenceless against his weaknesses. This has always been the case, but today he is even more susceptible and contemptible with shamelessness, oppression, injustice, immorality, Godlessness, and hopelessness becoming the norm of society, and in fact the hallmark of our civilization. Indeed, “By (the Token of) time (through the Ages). Verily, man is in a state of loss…” (Qur'an 103 verses 1-2). Allah “created man in the best of moulds, then We reduced him to the lowest of the low.” (Qur'an 95 verses 4-5) From this lowly status, Islam has come to elevate us; and the tool of our re-engineering it iba’dah.
Iba’dah are actions of our thoughts, tongues and limbs which are regulated by Allah. Such acts of iba’dah enjoin some practices and forbid others. When these are done, it will be like planting a seed which must bear fruits. The fruit of iba’dah is taqwah. So for instance, salaah is an iba'dah, so is zakaah, fasting and hajj. Their fruit is taqwah. In other words, one who carries out these acts is expected to have taqwah. Allah says: "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become muttaquun (those who have taqwah or piety)." (Qur'an 2 verse 183)
The chief purpose of the fasting of Ramadan is taqwah. Taqwah is the process of purifying ourselves and elevating our status from “the lowest of the low” to “the best example for mankind”. This process involves the purifying ourselves from those weaknesses and shackles of debasement. The primal element for purification is the nafs (soul). Allah says: "…by the soul and He Who perfected it in proportion, then He showed it what is wrong for it and what is right for it - indeed he succeeds who purifies it, and he fails who corrupts it." (Qur’an 91 verses 1-10)
Allah is the Creator, Fashioner and Director of our souls, therefore our souls can only be purified by obeying Him, doing the actions (iba'dah) which He has stipulated and this is the path of success. But to engage in what He has forbidden is the path of our destruction. This month of fasting is in all ways aimed at making us successful. During this month we are strongly motivated to carry out our acts of Iba'dah and at the same time we are enjoined to leave off sins and disobedience of Allah. Then we are encouraged to attune ourselves to the Qur'an and acquire a righteous disposition.
In Ramadan, we engage in recitation of the Qur'an, day and night. Indeed, “Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong).“ (Qur'an 2 verse 185) The Qur'an is the greatest source of influence on any sincere human mind. It is relevant for all ages, all civilization, all races, both sexes, all nation and people of all background, upbringing or status. Every time we read it, it has a new meaning to us. We are also encouraged to be sincere and righteous in this blessed month. In fact, righteousness is a second nature of those who have been saved from the catastrophe of the end-time confusion: “…Verily, man is in a state of loss except such as believe and do righteous deeds: for they shall have a reward unfailing.” (Qur'an 95 verse 6) It is also the characteristic of those who seek to rise above the lowly level: “…then We reduced him to the lowest of the low, except such as have Faith and do righteous deeds and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth and of Patience and Constancy.” (Qur'an 103 verse 3)
In short, fasting in Ramadan is an act of iba'dah which Allah has made compulsory on us, so that we can attain taqwah therein, and to help us achieve this taqwah is a process of soul purification vis-à-vis the encouragement to obey Allah and leave off sins, to recite and abide by the Qur'an and to acquire righteousness.

DID YOU SWALLOW?: You are allowed to taste food on your tongue if your job or duty requires it or use toothpaste as long as it does not go down your throat (you did not swallow). Ibn Abbas (RA) said: "There is no harm for a person to taste vinegar or anything while he is fasting, as long as it does not enter his throat." (Baihaqi)
