** ** No reliable moon sighting was reported on 12/02/02, hence Eid-ul-Adha for UK Muslims will be on Saturday 23/02/02 See ICOP's website for moon sighting reports from around the world Due to adverse weather conditions in UK, it is not always possible to
sight the New Moon (Hilal) from any one location within UK in each
month. Therefore, past Ulamah (Muslim Scholars) have preferred to
follow the nearby Muslim countries to UK for Moon Sighting news (e.g. Morocco).
However, recent advancements in telecommunications technology has lead
to the Moon Sighting news being received from many parts of the world,
specially the Middle East, and since this news comes as much as two days
before any possible sighting in UK (or nearby countries), Muslims in UK
have been greatly confused as to which country to follow. This confusion
is repeated almost every year - leading to Ramadhan and Eids
being celebrated over two or three days (instead of one day!) in UK. The
purpose of this Home Page is to remove this confusion and facilitate actual
moon sightings to be carried out in UK, using the available means (i.e.
science of astronomy and weather forecasts). If you have any suggestions
as to how this task may be achieved, please do not hesitate to contact
us. We hope to provide information on Actual Sighting reports for
each lunar month in UK in the future Insha-Allah. So, please Book
Mark this page and keep visiting it regularly.
The start of the Islamic lunar months are based on the visibility
of the crescent in the previous evening after sunset. Visibility
is dependent on a number of factors, one of which is the age of
the moon since its birth. The table below shows when the new moon is expected
to be visible in UK, (according to the Yallop criteria), as given by the
MoonCalc
program. Actual Sighting dates will be added to this page
as and when we get them, Insha-Allah. For Moon Sighting reports
from different parts of the world, please visit the ICOP
page by the Jordanian Astronomical Society.
"The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) calculated" (Al-Qur'an 55:5)
Delta T = (TD - UT) = 1 min 06s approx., UT = GMT Visibility Map For Eid-ul-Adha 1422 AH
For further information on the Islamic Calendar and International Lunar Date Lines, please visit the following site by Dr. Monzur Ahmed: http://www.starlight.demon.co.uk/ildl Extensive moon sighting research shows that (for a given sample) up to 15 % honest people reported sighting the moon when it was impossible to do so (e.g. when the moon has set before the sun!), whereas only 2% people reported not sighting the moon when it was easily visible. More information on this subject in the future, Insha-Allah. Scientific fact: If the moon is not sighted on a clear sky anywhere in the UK (or in any nearby countries on the same Time Zone), then it is impossible to have been sighted in any countries, East of UK's Time Zone, (3 hours or more earlier) on the same evening. If a sighting claim is reported in that evening then something else has been mistaken for the moon!
